2018 AAO American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) meeting

The 2018 AAO, American Association of Orthodontists held their 2018 annual meeting in Washington DC.

The 2018 AAO, American Association of Orthodontists held their 2018 annual meeting in Washington DC. May 4th through May 8th.   Chris Riolo and Cali Kaltschmidt from Riolo Orthodontics presented 6 hours of workshops and lectures to both doctors and staff from around the world.  Our Events started on Friday May 4th with 3D Printing workshops at 1:00 and 3:00. The workshops presented by both Cali Kaltschmidt and Dr Riolo were titled “From the Scanner to your Hand”  and consisted of a short presentation on 3D printing technology including SLS and DLP printing.  The lecture was followed by a hands on STL editing session lead the Cali using Meshmixer.  Breakout groups followed, participants were assigned to 1 of 3 printing groups to print their edited dental arches.  All of the participants enjoyed one on one time with Dr. Riolo Cali and the printer techs while the dental arches printed.

Moonray, Juell and Formlabs2 printers were available at the 2018 AAO workshops for the participants; each of the participants spend time with the printing software required to format dental arches on each of these printers.

Riolo Orthodontics uses the JUELL 3D-2 is one of the fastest 3D printers available for orthodontic practices today.

The JUELL 3D-2 is one of the fastest 3D printers available for orthodontic practices today. The Juell printer is capable of printing orthodontic models for complete clear aligner treatment in under 30 minutes without compromising resolution or accuracy. The Juell printer builds at speeds as fast as 36mm per hour with accuracy achieved by using enhanced UV/DLP/LED  technology and JUELL 3D Flash OC software to project an HD image with 1920 x 1080p resolution.  With the Juell printer we can print from an intra-oral or tabletop scanner using .stl, .obj, .3ds or .amf file formats.

Lingual Braces – First Annual ELSO (Elite Lingual Society of Orthodontists) meeting

Riolo Orthodontic attended the first annual ELOS meeting in Miami Fl. this week.  Our orthodontic practices represent 6 of the top practices in the country that specialize in lingual braces.

These orthodontist have been using lingual braces orthodontics for at combined 75 years and have thousand of treated patient under their belts.  Each of us bring something special to the table and we have have organized to meet as a study club to share knowledge to the benefit of our patients.

Our practices represent San Francisco CA, Seattle WA., New York NY., Chicago Ill, Maryland and Georgia.  Most of us have known each other professionally for a dozen years and we have teamed up to provide the best possible aesthetic orthodontic care for our patient. Each of our practices are experienced with Invisalign and understand that many patients can

not achieve the result they deserve with Clear aligner therapy alone (Invisalign).  We have each evolved to used lingual fixed appliance to address the needs of our patients. Some patients require lingual braces in conjunction with Invisalign, others can only be treated with braces behind the teeth.

Each of us have come to understand that many of our adult patient can only be treated aesthetically with braces behind the teeth (lingual braces) if we demand predictably excellent orthodontic results. Often treatment with Invisalign means that we cannot achieve the result these patient deserve.  Each of us know that we can achieve the best result for our patient using lingual braces (Braces behind the teeth) becouse we do each and every day in our practices.

As a group we have decided that we will not let our patient desire for aesthetic orthodontic treatment to interfere with the quality of their treatment result.  ELOS is dedicated to the notion that our patients deserve to have both aesthetic treatment and excellent treatment results!

American Association of Orthodontists 2018 annual meeting in Washington DC.

Dr Riolo speaking at last year annual session of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO)

Riolo orthodontics is going to the 2018 annual meeting of the American Association of Orthodontists in Washington DC.   Dr Riolo will be speaking on Sunday May 6th at the AAO meeting for the 4rd straight year.  This year Cali will also be speaking on 3D printing on Monday May 7th and leading a “Hands On” workshop on 3D printing Friday May 4th at the AAO meeting

Dr Riolo’s presentation last year was titled “Lingual Orthodontics: replacement of impacted and missing anterior teeth”.  Dr Riolo will be outlining a new technique for the provisional replacement of anterior teeth during orthodontic treatment using cutting edge 3D printing technology.  Our new pontic fabrication technique allows integration of the replacement tooth into the design of the custom lingual appliance system and therefore maximizing efficiency and aesthetics for the patient.  Dr Riolo’s lecture is focused on the advantages of lingual appliances in orthodontic treatment.

We have been using our Juell and Formlabs2 3D printers to fabricate pontics from either our STL library or those impacted teeth “digitally extracted” and converted from 3D radiographic images to STL file then the impacted canine is “extract” from the STL file edited and printed. the printed tooth is then used in order to fabricate an aesthetic pontic for the patient.  the extract STL is also incorporated into the custom appliance system used in the patient orthodontic treatment.

Riolo Orthodontics: expand our 3D printing capabilities

INNOVATION AND CUTTING EDGE OF DIGITAL DENTISTRY

Riolo Orthodontics has been using our FormLabs2 printer for a year and it has improve care and convenience for our patients.  3D printing enables us to provide same day retainers and incorporate provisional replacement teeth into your orthodontic appliance.  These advantages have resulted in a large increase in demand for these printing services. Our practice has grown to the point that we have decided to expand our printing capabilities and have acquired a new Juell 3D printer made by Park Dental

3D printing improves orthodontic care
3D printing allow same day retainer delivery and replacement of missing anterior teeth integrated into the patients orthodontic treatment

Our 3D printing technology has improved care for our patients by enabling us to provide retainers the same day as the braces removal and printing temporary replacement teeth used during treatment.

3D PRINTING IN A FLASH

  • JUELL 3D is one of the fastest 3D printers on the market today, Print orthodontic models for complete clear aligner treatment in under 30 minutes without compromising resolution or accuracy.
  • Builds at speeds as fast as 7 seconds per layer!
  • Unbelievable accuracy achieved by using enhanced UV/DLP/LED technology and JUELL 3D Flash OC software to project an HD image with 1920 x 1080p resolution.
  • Print from an intra-oral or tabletop scanner using .stl, .obj, .3ds or .amf file.
  • Print jobs are scalable. Build a quadrant or 18 arches with supports! The layer build time remains the same.

How the Juell 3D printer works

First we take a scan with our intra-oral digital scanner. subsequently, the digital model of the teeth is edited, a base is added and holes are filled and the model is smoothed out. The digital model is then uploaded to the 3D printer. The Juell printer employs SLA (Stereolithography) printing technology which hardens photo sensitive resin layer by layer with a ultraviolet light.  Each small layer builds on the last.  This SLA technology is used in the production many orthodontic appliances including Invisalign.

The benefits of the Digital orthodontics and 3D printing for patients

Our TruDefinition intra-oral scanner is less invasive and more convenient than the traditional impressions.  The 3D scan and 3D printing is also more accurate than impressions so the retainer will fit your teeth perfectly.  Since the these digital models are printed in house we can turn these models around the same day!  We also can fabricate custom pontics (replacement teeth) in house and integrate these teeth into your custom orthodontic appliance system.

Retainers for a lifetime!

All of our models are stored digitally and we give our patients copies of their final printed models of their teeth.  In addition, as a direct result of our 3D printing capabilities Riolo Orthodontics now offers replacement retainers for a lifetime.
