Next Gen Orthodontics: 3D printing to fabricate In-house custom appliances

In-house custom orthodontics is on the horizon.  With the advent of of accurate and inexpensive resin 3D printing it is now obvious to many that in-house clear aligners are the future of specialty orthodontic care.  As market penetration of intraoral scanner approaches 100% among orthodontic specialists the means to manifest these “models” physically cannot be far behind.  Over the next 5 years there will be an explosion of resin 3D printing in orthodontic office around the world.

Once an orthodontist has the ability to manufacture a same day or same appointment Essix type retainers using their 3D printers instead the alginate and stone technology from the last century; how far behind can be in-house clear aligner for the correction of minor problems such as food impaction spaces, minor rotations and orthodontic relapse?

3D printing has the potential to revolutionize orthodontics.  Rather than working with third party entities to purchase stock fixed orthodontic appliance systems or in some cases using third party entities for the fabrication custom fixed appliance systems such as Invisalign or Incognito we will soon have the ability to fabricate these appliance systems in-house.  We believe that many cutting edge orthodontist will soon be printing in-house custom appliances for their patient using both resin and metal 3D printing technology.  At Riolo Orthodontic we have been employing these technologies to improve the care we offer our patients.  We are dedicated to providing the best possible orthodontic care aesthetically.  We believe that not only should your smile look great after treatment but it should also look great during treatment!

American Association of Orthodontists 2018 annual meeting in Washington DC.

Dr Riolo speaking at last year annual session of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO)

Riolo orthodontics is going to the 2018 annual meeting of the American Association of Orthodontists in Washington DC.   Dr Riolo will be speaking on Sunday May 6th at the AAO meeting for the 4rd straight year.  This year Cali will also be speaking on 3D printing on Monday May 7th and leading a “Hands On” workshop on 3D printing Friday May 4th at the AAO meeting

Dr Riolo’s presentation last year was titled “Lingual Orthodontics: replacement of impacted and missing anterior teeth”.  Dr Riolo will be outlining a new technique for the provisional replacement of anterior teeth during orthodontic treatment using cutting edge 3D printing technology.  Our new pontic fabrication technique allows integration of the replacement tooth into the design of the custom lingual appliance system and therefore maximizing efficiency and aesthetics for the patient.  Dr Riolo’s lecture is focused on the advantages of lingual appliances in orthodontic treatment.

We have been using our Juell and Formlabs2 3D printers to fabricate pontics from either our STL library or those impacted teeth “digitally extracted” and converted from 3D radiographic images to STL file then the impacted canine is “extract” from the STL file edited and printed. the printed tooth is then used in order to fabricate an aesthetic pontic for the patient.  the extract STL is also incorporated into the custom appliance system used in the patient orthodontic treatment.

American Association of Orthodontists

Riolo Orthodontics spent much of the last week in San Francisco at the 2015 annual session of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).   There were also meetings held before the start of the AAO such as the American Lingual Orthodontist Association (ALOA) and the Society of orthodontic Educators (SOE) both of which were attended by Drs. Riolo and Bayirli. Dr Riolo also participated in the annual session lecturing on braces behind the teeth “Lingual Orthodontics: An Essential Tool for the Orthodontic Specialist”.  Dr Riolo’s lecture discussed; why lingual orthodontics is an essential tool for the orthodontic specialist as well as why lingual orthodontics is hard.  He also showed examples from our practice in Seattle illustrating the points make in his lecture.

Dr. Bayirli moderated a lecture room on Tuesday from 1:00 to 4:30 themed “Ideas from around the World” many of these lectures dealt with issues associated with accelerated orthodontics.  The office participated in continuing education as a group and learned about emerging technology’s such a medical 3D printing which will allow us to increase precision when fabricating orthodontic appliances using our intra-oral scanner.  Orthodontic technology is rapidly changing and we pride ourselves on bring the latest advances to our patient in Seattle.  Through our efforts at the University of Washington and participation in both national and international meetings we work to use evidence based treatment to achieve the best possible treatment outcome for our patients.  We employ the latest digital technology to produce custom orthodontic treatment solutions for our patient such as Incognito custom braces behind the teeth, the SureSmile system when using braces on the front of the teeth and the Invisalign system when moving teeth with removable clear aligners.

We are looking forward to the next annual meeting in Orlando Fl. in May of 2016.
